This year, the theme is sustainable fish and, in the evening, diners will be invited to the Forgotten Fish restaurant for a special meal prepared by chef Thomas Hunt, in collaboration with Taste of Freedom, using discard fish and waste vegetables. As the sun sets there will be a mass toast to the Thames and all who swim in her.

The third annual Feast On The Bridge takes place this Saturday. Part of the Thames Festival, the Feast sees a group of artists take over Southwark Bridge and transform the staid span into a Rabelaisian banquet, with the masses encouraged to take part in the creative process: visitors will be able to forage for food along the riverbank, churn their own butter, and help create a six-metre long cake, dubbed the "beast of the Bridge" - londonist.com

Beyond the culinary hijinks lies a serious aim: to re-connect the grazing public to the harvest cycle, helping to wean us off our modern urban assumption that plentiful supplies of whatever food we like are available year-round, and also to encourage us to re-connect with the social nature of communal dining. Oh, and also to throw bales of straw at each other in a straw fight, that's quite important too.
