The name "Soho" first appears in the 17th century. Most authorities believe that the name derives from a former hunting cry. James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth, used "soho" as a rallying call for his men at the Battle of Sedgemoor on 6 July 1685, half a century after the name was first used for this area of London.
Soho has inspired many similar locations around the world, in Argentina, Australia, China, Ireland, United States as well as Birmingham and London.
There are many Soho's, and a number of institutions, movement and thinkers that mirror and are inspired by what Soho stands for: - fad

The atmosphere in many cafés and restaurants strives to be "alternative", which makes this area of the city especially popular with young, upper-middle class Argentines as well as foreign tourists. The traditional low houses have been adapted into boutiques and bars, creating a bohemian (Bohemianism) feel. The square has a crafts fair.
